Golfer’s vs Tennis Elbow

What is the difference between tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow?

Tennis elbow, also called lateral epicondylitis causes pain on the outside of the elbow.

Where golfer’s elbow, also known as medial epicondylitis causes pain on the inside of the elbow.

Both these injuries can be caused from overusing the forearm due to repetitive movements (such as golf & tennis).

This is also a common injury in CrossFit athletes due to doing a lot of pull ups or bar work. Olympic lifting movements such as power cleans & front squats can put a lot of strain on the elbow joint too.

How can one treat & prevent these injuries from happening?

The PRICE principle can be used for both conditions: Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression & Elevation.

Stretching, physical therapy, massage & specific exercises will help to treat both conditions. An elbow brace or an elastic bandage can be worn for support.

Athletes can prevent tennis/golfer’s elbow by strengthening the forearm muscles, stretching before exercise & warming up properly beforehand.
